The bike, body and fueling details that protect your final 50 kilometers


Most cyclists do not fail a long ride because their legs suddenly stop working.

They fail because several small problems begin stacking on top of one another.



A tight neck becomes a headache. A missed feed becomes an empty tank. Tyre pressure that felt fast for the first hour becomes brutal after five. A quiet clicking noise becomes a mechanical problem. An enthusiastic start becomes survival mode before the hardest part of the ride has even begun.


Endurance riding is not simply about being fit enough to pedal for longer.

It is about protecting your body, your energy and your concentration for the entire day.


The further you ride, the more the details matter.



Start With A Bike That Is Ready

A long ride is not the place to discover that your gears do not shift properly under load or that your brake rotor rubs every time you stand.


Have your bike serviced seven to fourteen days before the event. This creates enough time to complete a proper shakedown ride and correct anything that does not feel right.


Your pre-event inspection should include:

  1. - Tyres and sidewalls

  2. - Brake pads and rotors

  3. - Gear indexing

  4. - Chain and drivetrain condition

  5. - Wheel bearings and headset

  6. - Cleat bolts

  7. - Saddle, stem and handlebar bolts

  8. - Electronic gears, lights and computer batteries


Pay attention to noise as well.

A click, creak, scrape or vibration is not just irritating. After several hours it can become mentally exhausting, and it may be warning you that something is loose, worn or incorrectly adjusted.


A quiet bike lets you concentrate on riding.


Your Position Must Be Sustainable

A position that feels fast for twenty minutes is not necessarily a position you can hold for eight hours.


Endurance comfort begins with the contact points: your hands, feet and saddle.


Saddle width matters because your sit bones need to be supported. Saddle angle matters because too much tilt can either drive excessive pressure into sensitive tissue or force your arms to constantly hold you in place.


Your hoods should allow a neutral wrist and easy access to the brakes. Your shoulders should remain relaxed and your elbows should have a soft bend rather than being locked straight.


Cleat position deserves attention too. Foot discomfort and knee irritation often become far more noticeable as the hours accumulate.


If you have never had a professional bike fit, arrange one well before your major endurance ride. Give yourself time to adapt and test the position outdoors.


Do not make a dramatic fit change in the final week unless you are solving an obvious problem.


Move Before Something Hurts

The best riding position is not one perfect position.


It is a selection of good positions that you move between throughout the day.


Change your hand position every ten to fifteen minutes. Relax your grip. Drop your shoulders away from your ears. Slightly alter the angle of your back and pelvis. On a safe section of road, stand smoothly for ten to twenty seconds to unload the saddle and allow blood flow to change.


You can also:

  1. - Lower one heel at a time to lengthen the calf

  2. - Gently open the chest and draw the shoulder blades back

  3. - Shake out one arm at a time when conditions are safe

  4. - Wiggle your fingers and toes

  5. - Sit further forward or back for short periods

  6. - Change cadence to alter muscular load


Do these things before you become uncomfortable.Once pain has settled in, it is much harder to remove.


Tyres Are Your First Suspension System

Many riders still believe that harder tyres are automatically faster.


On real roads, excessive pressure can increase vibration, reduce grip and force your body to absorb every imperfection in the surface. That vibration creates fatigue in your hands, shoulders, back and nervous system.


For endurance riding, use the widest tyre your frame and wheels safely accommodate. A move from a 25 mm tyre to a 28 or 30 mm tyre can provide a noticeable improvement in comfort when it is set at an appropriate pressure.


There is no universal perfect pressure.


It depends on:

  1. - Rider and bike weight

  2. - Measured tyre width

  3. - Tubed or tubeless setup

  4. - Road surface

  5. - Weather

  6. - Front and rear weight distribution


Use a reputable pressure calculator as a starting point, then test the result during training. The correct pressure should feel controlled and compliant without becoming vague, unstable or prone to rim strikes.


If fitting new tyres, do it early enough to inspect them and complete several rides. Fresh does not mean untested.


Fuel Before You Feel Hungry

By the time you feel empty, you are already trying to solve a problem that began much earlier.


For long endurance events, many trained riders aim for 60 to 90 grams of carbohydrate per hour. Riders who are newer to structured fuelling may be better starting around 40 to 60 grams per hour and progressively training the gut during longer sessions.


The Australian Institute of Sport notes that intakes of up to 90 grams per hour can be useful during ultra-endurance exercise, particularly when multiple transportable carbohydrates are used.


The easiest method is to divide the target into smaller, regular feeds.


For example, 20 to 30 grams every twenty minutes is usually easier to manage than trying to consume an entire hour’s nutrition at once.


Your fuel can include:

  1. - Sports drink

  2. - Gels

  3. - Chews

  4. - Rice bars

  5. - Bananas

  6. - Small portions of easily digested food


Use products you have already tested.

Do not change gel brands or introduce a concentrated supplement on the morning of the event. A product that looks perfect on paper is useless if your stomach refuses to tolerate it after four hours.


Make Hydration Visible

Hydration should not rely on memory.

Mark your bottles so you can see how much you should have consumed at different points. Set reminders on your Garmin or cycling computer to prompt you to drink and eat.


As a broad starting point, approximately 500 to 750 millilitres per hour may suit many riders, but requirements change significantly with temperature, intensity, body size and individual sweat rate.


More is not always better.

Drinking far beyond your losses can create its own problems. The goal is to develop a plan in training that matches the conditions and your body as closely as possible.


Electrolytes can be helpful when rides are long, conditions are hot or sweat losses are high. However, sodium needs also vary. Treat generic numbers as a starting point, not a personalised prescription.


Protect The First Third

The opening hour of a major ride feels easy because you are rested, fuelled and excited.


That is exactly why it is dangerous.


If your target is to complete a very long ride, the first third should feel controlled. Keep your breathing comfortable, your cadence smooth and your effort below the point where you begin accumulating unnecessary fatigue.


A heart-rate monitor can help provide an early warning when excitement, hills or group speed are pushing you above your planned intensity.


Do not chase every wheel.

Do not turn every rise into a test.


The people who look strongest early are not always the people who finish strongest.


Use Caffeine Strategically

Caffeine can improve alertness and reduce perceived effort, but more is not automatically better.


Loading heavily before the start may leave you jittery, uncomfortable or needing repeated doses simply to maintain the same feeling later. It can also create gastrointestinal problems for some riders.


Use the amount you have already tolerated in training. Consider saving meaningful caffeine for later in the ride, when concentration and perceived effort are becoming more challenging.


Remember that gels, drinks and coffee can all contribute to the total.


Count everything.


Concentration Is A Performance Metric

Late in an endurance ride, declining focus is not just a performance problem. It is a safety warning.


Watch for:

  1. - Missing nutrition reminders

  2. - Forgetting simple instructions

  3. - Poor line choice

  4. - Delayed reactions

  5. - Irritability or unusual silence

  6. - Difficulty holding a steady pace

  7. - Repeatedly dropping from the group


These signs may indicate inadequate fuelling, dehydration, overheating, excessive intensity or general fatigue.


Speak up early. Slow down, eat, drink and reassess.

Small problems are usually manageable when they are identified quickly.


Learn What Discomfort Is Telling You

Endurance riding involves discomfort, but not every type of discomfort should be ignored.


Numb hands may improve when you relax your grip, soften your elbows and change hand position. Hot feet may respond to loosening your shoes and moving your toes. Saddle pressure may improve after standing briefly and resetting your posture.


Sharp, worsening or one-sided pain is different.


It may indicate a fit issue, an injury or a mechanical problem. Trying to prove toughness by riding through it can turn a manageable warning into lasting damage.


Be tough enough to make a sensible decision.


Nothing New On Ride Day

The night before, prepare the equipment and decisions that can be prepared.


Lay out your kit. Charge your electronics. Organise your bottles and nutrition. Check the weather. Confirm your breakfast and timing.


Aim to eat a familiar carbohydrate-focused breakfast two to three hours before the start. Avoid unusually heavy, fatty or high-fibre foods if they have caused problems during training.


Excitement may make sleep more difficult, but one imperfect night does not destroy months of preparation. Maintain your normal routine rather than experimenting with sedating medication or unfamiliar sleep products.


On the morning of the event, complete a final check:


1. Tyres and pressure.

2. Brakes and drivetrain.

3. Bottles and fuel.

4. Computer and heart-rate monitor.

5. Clothing for the expected conditions.

6. Your pacing plan.


Then start calmly.


Final Thoughts

Endurance cycling is not won through suffering earlier than everyone else.


It is won through managing hundreds of small decisions better.


A comfortable position protects energy. Movement protects the contact points. Correct tyre pressure reduces fatigue. Regular carbohydrate protects the legs and brain. Hydration protects performance. Controlled pacing protects the final hours.


The system is simple:


**Fit. Move. Fuel. Drink. Pace. Focus.**


You do not need to feel perfect for the entire ride.

You need to recognize problems early, respond intelligently and keep moving forward.

Before your next endurance challenge, ask yourself one question:
